About the Treble ViolinThe treble violin is a 20th century creation founded primarily by Dr. Carleen Hutchins respected luthier and physicist. Consistent theory of acoustics and creative instrument making was utilized in making the treble violin the smallest and highest sounding instrument of the violin octet. The strings of the treble is tuned G-D-A-E one octave higher than a violin. There are not many treble violins in the world, because Dr. Hutchins has been busy constructing by hand 75 violins of various sizes, 165 violas and 12 cellos. Her violin octet was featured last year at New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art. However, other luthiers around the world who have received the blueprints are beginning to produce the treble instruments themselves. Dr. Hutchins, who is now ninety-three years old, completed my treble violin in August 2003 with the assistance of Carolyn Field. The E string on the treble violin is particularly special in that it is made of carbon rocket wire. Its tensile strength needs to be almost twice as strong as a regular violin E string since the register is much higher.
